De tentoonstelling in het ErfgoedLab
gebruikt het centrale concept van metamorfose om een creatieve dialoog in gang
te zetten tussen hedendaagse en oude kunst, media en disciplines. De
tentoonstelling laat vijf nieuwe werken zien van kunstenaars die zich hebben
laten voeden door de collectie van het Allard Pierson Museum - samen met een
aantal bijzondere stukken uit die collectie én uit andere museum- en
bibliotheekcollecties. In het lezingenprogramma en de workshop voor
onderzoekers worden de thema’s van de tentoonstelling verder uitgewerkt.
Wat betekent het om verandering vast te leggen, om een ogenblik of een
vluchtig moment van transformatie te isoleren? Metamorfose onttrekt zich aan
het zicht, maar is wel bij uitstek een visuele gebeurtenis. Oude en hedendaagse
kunstenaars zijn uitvinders van het
moment van metamorfose, door het te verbeelden. Naast de bekende mythische
verhalen vertelt metamorfose nog een verhaal – dat van het medium en van het
maken van beelden.
Dit is niet een tentoonstelling over archeologie of oude kunst, of over
de iconografie van metamorfose. De archeologische artefacten worden in een
nieuw licht getoond, eigendom gemaakt van de tegenwoordige tijd. De werken van
James Beckett, Rob Johannesma, Lawrence Malstaf, Barbara Philipp en Rebecca
Sakoun zijn speciaal voor deze tentoonstelling gemaakt. Ze raken aan
verschillende momenten die met metamorfose te maken hebben: van het
microtijdsverloop van beweging tot de transformatie van het beeld.
Ieder object uit de collectie van het Allard Pierson Museum en ieder
nieuw kunstwerk is niet alleen een voorwerp of een afbeelding, maar een plek
waar verschillende aspecten van het motief van metamorfose samenkomen. Ze
kunnen gezien worden als verbindingspunten die deel uitmaken van een grotere
kaart van beelden waarvan de grenzen alsmaar uitdijen, buiten het museum. Een
kaart die eindeloos aangevuld kan worden en verschillende beelden en media kan
omvatten.

The exhibition in the Heritage Lab takes the
central concept of metamorphosis as a means to stage a creative dialogue
between contemporary and ancient art, new and old media and practices of image
making. It shows five new works by artists who have taken the collection of the
Allard Pierson Museum as a point of departure, together with pieces from this
collection and from other museum and library collections. In the lecture series
and workshop for graduate researchers the themes of the exhibition will be
explored further.
What does it mean to capture change; to
isolate an instant of time or the fleeting moment of transformation?
Metamorphosis eludes vision, yet it is an exclusively visual event. Ancient and
contemporary artists invented the instant of metamorphosis by representing it.
Beyond the well-known mythical stories, metamorphosis tells another story –
that of the medium and of making of images.
This is not an exhibition about archaeology
or ancient art, or iconography of metamorphosis. It involves re-displaying
archaeological artefacts in a new light, appropriating them for the present.
The works by James Beckett, Rob Johannesma, Lawrence Malstaf, Barbara Philipp and
Rebecca Sakoun are produced for the occasion of this exhibition.
They touch upon different moments related to metamorphosis: from the
micro-temporality of motion, to the transformation of the image.
Each object from the collection of the Allard
Pierson Museum and each new piece of art is not only an object or an image, but
a site where different aspects of the motif of metamorphosis overlap. They can
be viewed as points of juncture included in a larger map of images the borders
of which can be seen as ultimately expanding, beyond the site of the museum. A
map that can be endlessly supplemented and include different images and media.
